Ransomware on Japanese Cloud Disrupts 495 Organisations

What happened

IDC Frontier, the cloud subsidiary of SoftBank, was hit by ransomware that disrupted 495 client organisations running on its IDCF Cloud. Rail operators JR East and JR Kyushu were among those affected, and both later warned that customer records may have been exposed.

Why it matters

When a cloud or hosting provider is hit, every customer on that platform shares the impact. Organisations that relied on a single provider, with no independent backups or recovery path, had little choice but to wait.

How to protect your AWS environment

  • Keep immutable, isolated backups in a separate account, such as AWS Backup with Vault Lock.
  • Test that you can restore critical workloads in a different region or account.
  • Document which suppliers your operations depend on and what happens if each one goes down.
